  3. Good list!

Three terrific recent series to watch out for are Zen with Rufus Sewell (sadly only one series owing to unpopular cancellation by the BBC), The Shadow Line (superb conspiracy thriller) and Case Histories, starring Jason Isaacs (and based on Kate Atkinson's novels).

  4. Indeed a good list!
But the comment from Robin made me look at Case Histories, just watched the first episode and it seems to be one of "those" series!
I would like to take the opportunity to add the following series to the list:
    Silent Witness
    Messiah
    Red Riding (3 movie-long episodes)
    Waking the Dead
    The Inspector Lynley Mysteries
    Trial and Retribution
...im sure I manage to forget a few others that I've seen... If you like british crime series, then this is a good start!
If you like more action, check out MI-5 aka Spooks, that is listed. It's one of my top 5 favorite series (the last and final season is coming up this fall (season 10)).

  7. Great list, and I agree with the suggested additions in the other comments. Only way to make it better: add the dates that TV versions were broadcast, e.g., 1989-1992

  8. nobody has mentioned criminal justice! 2 5 part mini- series and both BRILLIANT!!!
or, my personal fave, the inspector frost movies (yes the books are mentioned, and are amongst my faves), but David Jason is fantastic as frost!

  10. I'm surprised such great Mystery TV Series "Murder Rooms" isn't listed here.
I stumble on this site while online as I am a huge British Mystery Buff.
I assume it's because this series isn't directly based on a book. But neither is Cracker and it's listed here. Which is another TV series I found to be superb though sadly, immensely underrated.
I don't believe any British Mystery list can be complete without including "Murder Rooms" a great 19th century murder mystery loosely based on the real life forensic criminal investigations of Arthur Conan Doyle and Dr. Joseph Bell.

  11. Wire in the Blood" is also not mentioned here. While according to Wikipedia only four episodes of the entire 24 episodes are directly based on the books by Val McDermid. The entire series is based on characters crated by her.

"Wire in the Blood" is one of my favorite Tartan Noir style British Murder Mystery, very dark, very graphic yet very fast pace and intense. Another must see for any true mystery fan. The prime of British Television.

  12. Anther British Mystery series worth watching I couldn't find here is "Jericho" 2006, while admittedly not in the same high end level as “Murder Rooms” or “Wire in the Blood” "Jericho" offers a very mysterious, posh setting of post WWII Britain, perfect for the great mysteries at hand.
Although apparently not based on a book it's also one of my favorites.

I’m truly impressed by all the titles mentioned on this website. The most complete I’ve seeing online so far. I’ve already started watching “The Shadow Lane” and “Case Histories” thanks to this website (Since I don‘t live in the UK). “Zen” will be my next.
    Thanks guys!
    Enjoy! Allan

  13. Thank you very much for this list - to the original poster and to all the people that suggested additions. Many of these series have been broadcasted here in Finland but not all so I have some series fun ahead. And I've yet to see what else this blog has on offer. Great job!

  15. I noticed that there is no mention of Wire in the Blood here based upon characters written by Val McDermit...
